The aardvark, scientifically known as Orycteropus afer, stands as a nocturnal mammal and is the singular species within the order Tubulidentata, primarily inhabiting central and southern Africa. Exhibiting a timid and defenseless nature akin to the size of a pig, it possesses distinctive features including a long head, a piglike snout, large ears, sparse body hair, a robust tail, and short legs.
This creature showcases remarkable burrowing abilities, facilitated by its clawed front feet. Typically spending the daylight hours in its burrow, the aardvark becomes active during the night, skillfully digging into termite and ant nests. Using its elongated and sticky tongue, it consumes the insects it finds within these nests. Notably, the aardvark boasts unique teeth, lacking enamel, a distinctive feature that places it in its own order. Upon reaching full maturity, it attains a length of approximately 1.5 meters (5 feet), and its tongue extends an impressive 30 centimeters (12 inches).
