The aardwolf, scientifically known as Proteles cristatus, is a nocturnal mammal belonging to the hyena family, Hyaenidae. With a distinctive appearance, it exhibits a yellowish-grey coat adorned with dark stripes and measures approximately 70 cm (30 inches) in length, excluding its bushy tail. Native to eastern and southern Africa, the aardwolf commonly resides in the burrows of aardvarks.
This unique creature primarily sustains itself by consuming termites, exhibiting an impressive appetite by devouring up to 300,000 termites per day. Additionally, it may include other insects and small mammals in its diet.
Mating behaviors differ between genders, as males engage in monogamous relationships, while females, with a more extensive range, may mate with multiple males. This nocturnal mammal plays a crucial role in the ecosystem, contributing to pest control through its specialized termite-focused diet.
